Advanced Image effect #3

Turn this icon:          Into this:         Or this:


1 Start prepearing your base (cropping, rezising, sharpening etc.).


2 Duplicate (Layer > Duplicate) the base and set the blendmode to Screen on a opacity which fits your image. In this case I sat the opacity to 62%.
Go to Layer > Flatten image.


3 Make a new layer (Layer > New > Layer) fill it with a lightblue color, I chose #b5d7f4, but any lightblue color will work. Set the layer to Soft Light, 100%.


4 Make a new selective color layer (Layer > New adjustement layer > Selective color) and set the settings similar to these:
Greens +100/+40/+100/0
Cyans +60/+30/+40/0
Blues +40/+40/+100/+10
Neutrals +60/+10/+60/0


5 Make a new layer and fill it with a light purple color. I chose #b500f4. Set the layer to Difference at 9%.


6 Make a new hue/saturation layer and set the settings similar to these:
Master 0/-20/0
Yellows 0/+20/0
Cyans 0/+20/0


7 Make a new color balance layer (Layer > New adjustements layer > Color Balance). Set the settings similar to these:
Midtones -30/-50/-47
Highlights 0/0/+30
Shadows +16/0/+27


8 Go to Layer > Flatten Image.

Optional

9 Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool (Need a guide to this tool?) and drag a ellipce on an important piece of the icon.


10 Go to Layer > New Adjustement Layer > Gradient Map and set the gradient to black/white.
Add some brushes or some text and then you're done. Here's my icon:
